CommuniClarity has one mission: help our clients communicate with clarity. To that end, we provide the following services:

  • Proofreading and Editing: We provide high-quality, efficient and affordable copy-editing, proofreading and manuscript analysis.
  • Formatting and Layout: Many editors require adherence to specific formatting and layout guidelines. We are versatile in styles such as AP, APA, AMA, Chicago, MLA and Turabian and will adhere to particular stylesheets required by editors, professors, schools or programs.
  • Electronic Publication: One document. Many venues. We offer translation of new or legacy documents into ePubs ready for distribution on iTunes, Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, Android, the Web, and other electronic publication platforms. For new documents, the pricing for print-ready publication includes ePub formatting at no additional cost.
  • Web Services: Need help building a website from scratch or just tweaking a bit of code? We offer complete Web design, assessment, consultation, and tune-up.



Meet our staff

Melanie Peck, Editor-in-chief


Melanie has been a writer all her life, publishing her first poem in the Palo Alto Times after winning a contest at age 10. She is an award-winning journalist and public relations writer/editor, spending 12 years as a reporter before switching to public relations for 13 years at the University of Nevada, Reno. She won more than a dozen awards for journalism from the Nevada Press Association, including Outstanding Journalist of the Year, First Place for Investigative Journalism, and she was the lead reporter when the Record-Courier, a Douglas County, Nevada newspaper, won First Place for Freedom of the Press. As editor of Nevada Silver & Blue, the University of Nevada, Reno’s magazine, she guided the publication to some 25 awards, including Gold and Silver awards from CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), as well as numerous awards from the Nevada Press Association in the magazine category.

Melanie is a member in good standing of the National Association of Science Writers, the Editorial Freelancers Association and Mensa. In April 2012, she earned Level 1 certification with Professional Ski Instructors of America. When she’s not writing, editing, gardening or shuttling her kids around town, you can find her on the slopes, volunteering with the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program or teaching at Squaw Valley.

Melanie earned a bachelor’s in English/Creative Writing from UCLA in 1985 and a master’s in English/Composition and Rhetoric from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2006. She is writing a novel about Bosnia.

Patrick McDonnell, Editor


Patrick spent 18 years writing, editing and proofreading copy for the University of Nevada, Reno, culminating in work as managing editor of the campus’ 50,000-circulation, quarterly magazine, Nevada Silver & Blue.  He is a freelance journalist for the weekly Vegas Seven magazine’s Dispatches column.

Patrick always has had an affection for the magic created by the interplay of words. Since his high school days creating fiction for a University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop group, Patrick knew communication would be a large part of his life’s work. He received his bachelor of science in journalism at West Virginia University and then completed graduate-level journalism courses at the University of Nevada, Reno, including a class in persuasive writing.

Patrick enjoys reading historical fiction and sports-oriented work. He plans to write a novel about hockey.

Jim Cooper, Content Architect


Jim has been described as the consummate publishing professional. His workflow designs motivate editors and artists through a series of teachable concepts. He is the SO&SO “Content Architect” and the senior developer of the SO-Workshop series, including The Journalists’ Guide to InCopy and InDesign, InDesign Mojo, and Ha-Ja-Du-Dat™.

Jim is an Adobe expert and the chapter representative for the Reno Adobe InDesign User Group. He draws on 30 years of pre-press, content-management and multi-channel publication experience to develop effective InDesign and InCopy workflows.

Aspen Kuhlman, Content Coordinator 


Aspen Kuhlman is both the creative and technical inspiration behind SO&SO Co LLC, a Reno-based single-source publishing firm. She applies her insight and energy to create rewarding experiences for both publishers and their readers. Her training sessions are truly collaborative efforts, delivered with her infectious sense of humor. In addition to producing the SO-Series Publication workshops, she authors a series of children’s educational books.

Mike Wilhelm, Web Services


Mike is visual designer at his core, which enables him to carry his passion of design across video, web, and print experiences. He is  an out-of-the-box thinker with a passion for new technology. An avid learner, he absolutely loves pushing the envelope and discovering new possibilities.
